I am an adult with a steady job and a child on the way. I pay taxes. I drive a Volkswagen Jetta. I have better things to do with my time than write a fantasy football analysis article. But Tieds sent a Snap to T-Mike, and Jeff had to go and make a post-draft rankings . And Hell hath no fury like a Sullivan scorned in fantasy. So let’s get this over with.
Stop drafting running backs. They aren’t good at fantasy. Sure, it can be fun to look at your team in week zero and see two or, wait for it, three (!!) bell cow backs about to average 25 carries, 120 yards, and 2 TDs per game, but it just doesn’t work that way. Google ZeroRB if you want the theory behind it, but let me sum it up: STOP DRAFTING RUNNING BACKS.
To make my point, I went back and looked at the 2014, 2015, and 2016 drafts (all of the ones since the league expanded). Specifically, I noted teams that drafted only 1 RB in the first 5 rounds. Sometimes it was 4 WRs, other times it was 2 WRs, 1 TE, 1 QB. Whatever it was, it didn’t matter. Just as long as there was one (or fewer, though that unfortunately never happened) running back in picks 1-5. Here are the results.
President’s: Sullivan (2nd place; stayed in President’s)
Royal Purple: None
Gold: TJ Schmitt (4th; promoted to White)
Royal Purple: Jeff (1st; President’s), Tex (2nd; President’s), Crispin (3rd; President’s)
White: D-White (8th; White)
Gold: Hanus (4th place; White), Surge (7th place; Gold)
*Side note: Surge drafted 2 QBs in the first five rounds because of course he did
President’s: Sullivan (1st; President’s), Knust (4th; President’s), Bam (5th; President’s), Crispin (6th; President’s), Jeff (11th; White)
Royal Purple: Pratt (2nd; President’s), Benda (3rd; President’s), Juice (5th; Royal Purple), TMike (11th; Gold)
White: Langtimm (2nd; President’s), TShan (4th; Royal Purple)
Gold: Matt Kenny (7th, Gold)
By my count, someone has drafted 1 RB in the first 5 rounds 20 times. Of those, the person was relegated twice. Four times the person stayed in the same league (not counting staying in President’s). The other 14 times, the person was promoted/stayed in President’s. Interestingly, Jeff used to believe in this strategy, but after just one fluke season of bad beats he abandoned it, choosing results over process.
Going back to Jeff’s preseason rankings, below shows where his #1 team in each league drafted RBs (I’ve removed names to protect the innocent):
President’s: 1st and 2nd round
Royal Purple: 1, 2, 3
White: 1, 3, 5
Gold: 1, 2
As far as those people who drafted 1 RB this year: Crispin, Denton (autodraft), Knust, Sullivan, TShan, Juice, TMike, Ward, TA, Moran, Zachar, Foster. Unfortunately, it is impossible for all 12 to be in President's next year, but wouldn’t that be fun.
As a follow up to the previous article, I looked up who drafted 3+ RBs in the first 5 rounds. There were 33 instances of it. Of those, the team finished high enough to be promoted (or stay in President's) 10 times. The team remained in the same league 9 times. And the team was relegated 14 times.
This year, BNels, Benda, Billy, Renner, Prieur, TJ Schmitt, Tieds, Stew, Jeff, Jameson, Nigro, J Renner, and Sam VonG all drafted 3+ RB in the first 5 rounds. Godspeed.
